ABOUT PLAYING CARDS
Playing cards were first invented in China during the 9th century. It was in Europe in the 14th century, during the Renaissance, that the face cards were changed to represent European royalty and attendants (Jack, Queen and King). This lesson features those Renaissance-developed royal J, Q & K cards. I CAN STATEMENTS : Today I will learn about SPACE so that I CAN create a portrait with the correct PROPORTIONS and fill my paper with my drawing. Today I will learn about the DOUBLE-LOADING technique so that I CAN create various COLOR mixtures and VALUES as I paint. Today I will learn about LINE and COLOR so that I CAN trace my lines with black paint to create CONTRAST. |
ABOUT THE SCARAB BEETLE Ancient Egyptians believed that scarab beetles symbolized the restoration of life. They used depictions of scarab beetles as amulets, which are like good luck charms. They would wear ceramic, stone or gold scarab beetles as necklaces, use them to stamp important documents or send them as friendly gifts. Students I will learn about LINE, so that they CAN draw the CONTOUR LINE of a SCARAB BEETLE. I’ll know I have it when my SCARAB BEETLE takes up most of the space of the paper. Students will learn about PATTERN, so that they CAN create PATTERNS inside the wings and body of my SCARAB BEETLE using repeated LINES and SHAPES (and COLORS). Students will learn about SYMMETRY, so that they CAN draw and add PATTERNS to a SCARAB BEETLE so that it is the same on both sides. |
This Cool and Warm Modern Landscape lesson builds on the basic knowledge of warm and cool colors while creating an abstract landscape that has depth.
Students Will: -l earn about COLOR, so that I CAN identify WARM and COOL colors and add CONTRAST to my LANDSCAPE by limiting my color palette to warm or cool colors for the land and sky. -learn about LINE, so that I CAN create a LANDSCAPE by drawing the CONTOUR LINES of hills and mountains. -learn about SPACE, so that I CAN layer and OVERLAP my hills and mountains to create a FOREGROUND, MIDDLE GROUND and BACKGROUND. |
